Magnitude 8.9 earthquake strikes near Japan, spawns massive tsunami.

One of the most powerful earthquakes on record struck off the northeast coast of Japan Friday afternoon.  The temblor has triggered a massive tsunami that sent a wall of water ashore in Japan and has prompted evacuations as far away as the United States west coast.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 2:46pm local time (05:46 UTC) at a depth of 15.2 miles beneath the surface.  Its epicenter was 80 miles east of Sendai on the Japanese main island of Honshu or 231 miles northeast of Tokyo.
The effects of the quake were felt across Honshu and in the capital of Tokyo as buildings rattled and swayed.  Workers streamed into the streets trying to escape the shaking buildings.  The tip of the Tokyo Tower was bent and smoke was seen from a number of buildings.
A 23 foot tsunami struck the nation’s east coast enveloping the coastal areas in a wall of water.  Japanese television showed boats and cars tossed about like toys and tons of debris floating in muddy waters.  The airport at Sendai was completed flooded with water and debris and fires have been sparked from the destruction.

Officials placed the loss of life at 44 so far.  The death toll will likely continue to climb in the days to come as the effects of the devastation are fully realized.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a widespread Tsunami Warning for most areas along the entire Pacific Ocean.  Areas with the potential to experience tsunami waves include Hawaii, Guam, the U.S. west coast, Mexico’s west coast, and Central and South America’s west coast.
The center had measured tsunami waves of 9.2 feet at Hanasaki, Japan, 5.1 feet at Midway Island and 2.1 feet at Saipan.
In Hawaii, the state civil defense authority has ordered the evacuation of coastal areas including the popular tourist area of Waikiki.  Warning sirens were being sounded every hour to ensure residents and tourists seek higher ground.
The PTWC warned that, “A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along  coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii. Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property.”
Leading up to today’s quake there had been dozens of sizeable temblors over the past week ranging from magnitude 4.7 to 7.2.  Strong aftershocks continue to occur at the same location.
